When former Bond Hill Community Council President Dr. Rea Waldon stepped down from her post effective July 1, many community members anticipated mid-year elections, but that is apparently not to be. According to minutes from the June 6, 2019 Community Council meeting, taken by Interim Secretary Celeste Wonson, the assembled community members decided that no election would be held. The Council decided that Vice President Vickie Jackson, who I have profiled previously, will assume the post. There was no official record of the vote count in favor of elevating Ms. Jackson.
Local 12 (WKRC) reports that amidst financial struggles and an increased need for its services, Cincinnati’s largest homeless shelter, Bethany House Services, has plans to consolidate its programs in Bond Hill. The programs, which are currently spread across five shelters in Fairmount, Westwood, College Hill and Bond Hill, will be anchored in a new 50,000 square foot, $500,000 facility adjoining St. Aloysius.
P olicy wonks, rejoice! While the Bond Hill Community Council generally adjourns during February, this year there will be a special session on the Bond Hill Community Council bylaws. There will be a discussion on the proposed changes to the bylaws and a vote will be held in March. Come on out to the Bond Hill Recreational Center for what is sure to be a rigorous debate. As always: 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 7th, 1501 Elizabeth Pl, Cincinnati, OH 45237.
S kepticism did not stymie the Port's plans at the January 3rd Bond Hill Community Council (BHCC) Meeting. Despite a mixed reception in the proceeding months, ultimately most BHCC members voted to support the Port / PennRose plan to build a three-story affordable senior building on Reading Road. (1) The BHCC voted to send a letter of support with the Port Authority's application for the sale of tax credits that will ultimately subsidize the project. The AYEs carried the vote, 10:4. (2) The BHCC voted to amend the Bond Hill...
Perhaps the single most important opportunity to stay engaged in the Bond Hill community is at the Bond Hill Community Council meeting. The meeting takes place the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM, at the Bond Hill Recreation Center, 1501 Elizabeth Place. If you (like me) weren't able to attend the March meeting, here are highlights: Cincinnati Fire Department Captain Britton reports that on March 19, 2018, the Fire Department will be closing out applications for the position of Firefighter. The application is online and testing will be...
Vickie Jackson says a few words often: "family", "community", "togetherness". Always together. Talking to the Vice President of The Bond Hill Community Council for two wide-ranging hours this past weekend, it's clear that her priorities are on rebuilding the sort of unity she found in Bond Hill, when she moved here as a child in the late 1960's. The community then boasted a number of restaurants and shopping establishments that she rattles off with ease but more than that she says, "Bond Hill was fun." Children played together easily with...
